In addition to comics, I also really love board games. In the past 7 years or so I have played so many different games, in large part thanks to CBY contributor and my friend, Dan Nixon. My favorite current game is UnMatched by Restoration Games. Dan and I hold an UnMatched Tournament at my house every January. UnMatched is the "ultimate battle between unlikely fighters" with sets that include legendary characters, literary ones, and some of your favorite Marvel heroes. Now, Jason Taylor, the Visual Restoration Wizard of Restoration Games, joins me and Dan Nixon on the podcast to talk about his role at Restoration Games and to discuss their newest Kickstarter for UnMatched Adventures: TMNT. That's right, it's the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles joining the world of UnMatched, with a different artist taking on the task of bringing a different turtle to life. You can sign up here to be notified when the Kickstarter goes live on October 1st: https://restorationgames.com/tmnt-sign-up/. It was great to chat with Jason and I cannot wait for this set and play the co-op game but also see how the Turtles stack up against Sherlock Holmes or Buffy or Daredevil.
From the publisher
Unmatched Adventures: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the second title in the co-operative Unmatched Adventures series.
Play as Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo to take down Shredder or fight off Krang. They'll be joined by a host of TMNT characters.

[00:02:46] I think I'm going to make Jimmy play a goblin warlock just to get even.
[00:02:52] Hello and welcome to comic book Yeti's Crypted Creator Corner. I'm one of your hosts, Jimmy Guest Barrow, and I have a little something different tonight but an episode that I am very excited for.
[00:03:04] I'm a comic book yeti contributor, Dan Nixon who is the Dungeon Master and Game Master for whenever we play games.
[00:03:13] And you've heard Dan's name come up on the podcast before but Dan is joining me tonight.
[00:03:17] And we have the visual restoration wizard from Restoration Games, Jason Taylor. And we're going to talk about my favorite word game unmatched.
[00:03:30] Dan and I do a unmatched tournament. We've done it for the past two years. We do it in January.
[00:03:37] It's going to be coming up again, but they are doing Kickstarter for a new teenage mutant Ninja Turtles set. I can't wait to find out all about it and to tell you about it. And if you are unfamiliar with unmatched and you're in for a real treat because it really is my favorite board game and it is so much fun.
[00:03:55] But please welcome to the podcast, Jason Taylor. Jason, how you doing tonight?
[00:04:01] I'm doing great. Thanks for having me.
[00:04:03] Yeah, I am as soon as I saw this, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to kind of have the Crypted Creator Corner branch out a little bit because the turtles are clearly you know started out with Eastman and Lance comic book.
[00:04:19] And have been through many different iterations. Super excited that there's this unmatched set that's going to be coming to Kickstarter that folks are going to be able to back.
[00:04:31] You see, I'm very excited about it as soon as I as soon as I heard about it. But why don't you tell us a little bit first about you know restoration games and what you do for restoration games and then we'll we'll tell the listeners about unmatched and what they can expect from this teenage mutant Ninja Turtles set.
[00:04:46] Sure, yeah. Yeah, so restoration games since about 2017 has formed I've been there pretty much since the beginning and think a couple months in helped with a logo and then just kind of went from there but it's a team of quite a few now but we started out with four of us Justin Jacobson who started the company was a was an attorney and was actually robbed of you kind of talking to him and he wanted to start a game.
[00:05:16] Company and this the story as I'm told just hey I've been thinking about starting a game company and Rob said that's a horrible idea.
[00:05:27] And Justin said well hold on here me out and then Rob said oh that sounds cool so it's basically taking old games from 80s and even earlier 90s.
[00:05:38] Bringing them back but not just putting a fresh set of pain on it actually getting in there and getting under the hood and modernizing the gameplay today to today standards.
[00:05:52] So you know we started with that and just been rolling you know as through quite a few games and then we hit unmatched fast forward a couple years in we we hit unmatched and and that was really a game.
[00:06:07] I mean it's a game designed around.
[00:06:10] A few different games you know epic doals which was the old Star Wars epic doals.
[00:06:15] I was big inspiration there's also a little bit of hero skate thrown in a little bit of you know the game.
[00:06:23] Mechanics are the game board mechanics you know there's a little bit of 10 hours of in there so there's there's some interesting restoration there but because of that we kind of just created its own brand around that so.
[00:06:37] So that that's a bit of restoration game's history and and a little bit of unmatched but yeah and it's it's formed with Rob dovio I worked with Rob dovio at Hasbro Lindsey dovio as well.
[00:06:52] I mean between all of us I don't know wait I've got 20 years in games and maybe more.
[00:07:00] I lost count Rob's definitely more than that.
[00:07:06] There's quite a few years of experience on the team was Stephen Baker now and point of view so who's also been as well.
[00:07:13] Awesome yeah yeah I am I think I first I'm sure Dan it was Dan that introduced me first to to unmatched and.
[00:07:26] But I tell folks who you know might still be in in the realm of like old school board games who maybe you know don't haven't had haven't been to like a modern game night in the past few years and.
[00:07:42] I mean I think it's definitely gotten better you know definitely the past five years or so but I think when Dan and I you know and Dan first started introducing me to different games it was like.
[00:07:54] I was just amazed at like how far board games had come like like not really having a normal game night and we played so many different games in the past I'd say seven years.
[00:08:07] And it's you know if you aren't familiar right now with like where board games are it's it's a whole new world from from what it was this fact I mean I'm 45 so from you know growing up it's it's a very different world from from then from like 20 or 30 years ago and it's just.
[00:08:32] And it's just a lot of board games and even you know we've been to packs on plug.
[00:08:36] A few times and it's just unbelievable the different types of games that are out there but but for any listeners that aren't familiar I mean unmatched there are many different sets is it's essentially like a kind of like a dual like a like a fighting game and you got a game board there's a little game piece that you have that you can move around on the board and you fight your opponent using.
[00:09:00] Different cards and that you can you know have from your from your hand.
[00:09:05] It's a fairly easy game to play like in terms of the different actions that you can do but there's some unbelievably fun sets and especially in the comic book world I mean I have four sets right over here to my right I have the the house kitchen set which has dare devil electra and bulls eye there's the redemption rose set.
[00:09:27] I think I also have the teen spirit set which is Miss Marvel squirrel girl I want to say cloak and dagger look and dagger yeah yeah and.
[00:09:38] And a friend of the podcast who has been on here before but Heather Vaughan I have the buffy the vampire slayer set which Heather did all the card design and.
[00:09:49] I think it's weird as well yeah she's she's she's.
[00:09:53] Yeah yeah she did amazing with that yeah yeah exactly I think you know to me the fun of unmatched you know is yes the first game I think is fun but I think we're really starts to become on is when after that first game you start to realize.
[00:10:11] Oh wait so like that really felt like I was playing the characters it can feel the same way when I get this other character and then oh no it's going to feel like I'm playing this character that that's a me is.
[00:10:23] The magic the game designers have done with this game is you know each each little set or not even the set the character itself you can take it and feels like you're playing that character and then.
[00:10:36] The other part of the magic he started to realize is oh I can think this out of this set and play you know.
[00:10:43] Broken dagger against Dracula or my favorite thing to say is you know squirrel girl versus you know.
[00:10:50] The T-Rex so yeah I'm.
[00:10:52] I was going to say one of my favorite games was my wife Sarah and Dan and I played I think my wife was buffy I was Sherlock Holmes and Dan was the T-Rex.
[00:11:05] Yeah like.
[00:11:07] Um Dan I wanted to ask you because I think you introduced me to unmatched like what was it that first kind of attracted you as as somebody who.
[00:11:17] I mean you have more board games than anybody I know like you show up with a big bag of stuff whenever we have game night what was it the first attracted you to the gameplay or you know anything about unmatched.
[00:11:30] So when I first started you know it was a bunch of.
[00:11:33] As anyone probably watching YouTube videos and seeing top 10 lists and seeing what what do I need to get to start it and I just saw this game and it was battle.
[00:11:42] Legends will volume one and I bought it and I'm pretty sure one of my first three plays was with you Jimmy and I think within three turns I looked at you and I said I will buy whatever this game puts out.
[00:11:56] And basically just like you said it's it's fun to get a set and see how they fit together but the great part like you said it's how does moonlight.
[00:12:05] Like jekyll and hide or how does sin bed fight bloody Mary like that's that's the cool part of it and.
[00:12:14] And everyone even you know you go online and you go to the fan sets and you see how those are made and what do you participate in that because where they're balanced from up but seeing seeing the IPs is a great way to get people into the game because they may not wanted like.
[00:12:29] And I we all know an IP is a great weekend and more of us especially and I've seen many people now say turtles okay now I'm going to get an on match.
[00:12:38] Yeah, yeah it's definitely turned some heads from just even the last gen gone you know seeing people go oh okay turtles which I mean.
[00:12:47] I don't blame them you know it's a lot of fun but yeah I agree I think that's a you know IP is definitely a way to get people and and I think what's what's great about the community of unmatched I think.
[00:13:01] People are always ready and and almost they're louder than we are for you know getting people into unmatched I think they're.
[00:13:11] You know everyone's excited when there is a new IP because then you know there's more people coming in more people playing and that just means more you know more unmatched for everyone right so.
[00:13:20] Right so that's that's always great to see and I love even see in the fan decks that are out there and it's always funny to see a fan deck where it's like oh yeah just wait and see.
[00:13:33] So that's that's always an arrest.
[00:13:36] Yeah yeah go ahead Dan and this that especially is going to be part of the.
[00:13:44] Unmatched cooperative series because on that's obviously at the get go was a one v one or potentially even three to be to but this is now the co-opset just like the tales to a maze set with those great characters and those great I mean the crypt is we obviously loved it here.
[00:14:00] Yeah yeah the tales to amaze which is.
[00:14:04] There's like what the golden bat and then mothman.
[00:14:08] Yeah there's so there's the four heroes and and interestingly you know for people that don't want to do cooperative what's cool about that set as you can actually take the heroes out of that set and still play them in in classic unmatched.
[00:14:21] Yeah we'll be the same for the turtles you will be able to take the turtles out and play them nice you know as heroes and in other sets.
[00:14:29] And then yeah you had you had some really interesting heroes in that set you had golden bat which.
[00:14:38] Many people had not heard of and I think is it that's one of the fun things as an art director is like oh this isn't an interesting character let's dig deep into this.
[00:14:46] And then there's Jill Trent which was it you know kind of grounded and caught old very.
[00:14:53] Yeah forgot the dates on those comics yeah I think it's like golden age comics like the 30s and 40s.
[00:15:00] Yes yeah and then we had.
[00:15:03] We had any Christmas which was you know kind of a tall tale legend.
[00:15:10] Yeah character and then Tesla Nikola Tesla which a little bit of almost a ghostbusters take on Tesla there.
[00:15:19] Which is which is the coils are great yeah yeah so so we have those and then you can be either against.
[00:15:24] a knowledge that often became.
[00:15:25] A lot of other people on Mothman in his side at the game board or a Martian invasion on on The Other Side with The Flying saucer that's helping Martian solid with the Hornfields, it's a lot of fun I think it was you know darum
[00:15:42] Surprise you know i think it surprise all of us how you know we thought it was going to be doing very well but i think it it's done even better after
[00:15:52] the kickstarter than we anticipated.
[00:15:55] I mean, obviously we hoped for
[00:15:57] because we definitely wanted more of them.
[00:15:59] We saw it and that's why we named it unmasked ventures
[00:16:02] because we saw it as more than this
[00:16:05] that we could go beyond this.
[00:16:08] So again, as you said, being able to attach turtles
[00:16:11] to the second one, I think is a really exciting thing
[00:16:14] for us and again, for the fans,
[00:16:17] I think people are gonna be really excited about.
[00:16:19] Oh, yeah.
[00:16:20] I mean, I think everyone always loves the turtles
[00:16:25] like no matter what iteration they take.
[00:16:29] And just from the, not just as the comic book perspective
[00:16:34] but also the art perspective.
[00:16:36] I really appreciate with the game design,
[00:16:40] the design of the different cards.
[00:16:42] So for any listeners who aren't familiar
[00:16:43] in terms of when you move your piece around the game board
[00:16:47] and you either have a melee attack,
[00:16:50] so you have to be next to the character that you're fighting
[00:16:53] or a ranged attack.
[00:16:56] And essentially when you decide to attack,
[00:16:58] you play a card and the other player can,
[00:17:01] who you're playing against can play a defense card
[00:17:04] if they so choose, you play him face down,
[00:17:07] tell we play both players then turn over the card
[00:17:10] and you kind of look at what the card says
[00:17:13] to decide whether or not they defended it successfully
[00:17:16] or if you attack and you try and defeat your opponent
[00:17:19] that way.
[00:17:21] But the card designed for each character,
[00:17:23] I mean, there's just some absolutely gorgeous
[00:17:26] card design.
[00:17:28] The Daredevil set in particular
[00:17:31] is just one of my favorites
[00:17:35] and in terms of the legend set,
[00:17:39] I'm a real big send bad fan.
[00:17:41] I honestly think I could be undefeated with send bad.
[00:17:45] I lost once because I had a little too much to drink
[00:17:48] and I forgot what his special ability was
[00:17:51] and I didn't use it.
[00:17:53] And I lost.
[00:17:54] I love the dance.
[00:17:55] Sheekiness had no control.
[00:17:57] I've heard that story many times.
[00:17:59] I've heard that excuse many times.
[00:18:03] But yeah, it sounds like you're a big Oliver Bear fan
[00:18:06] which he did both of those and I am as well.
[00:18:09] I mean, I honestly have had just a blast working
[00:18:15] with all of these artists that have worked on and match.
[00:18:18] And I think that's one of my favorite things about unmatched.
[00:18:21] I think Oliver team on the picture people we call it
[00:18:24] is basically Lindsey Davio, who's his production
[00:18:28] and Ian Reed, who his graph design and some illustration as well.
[00:18:33] And myself, it's just a fun part to work
[00:18:39] with just some of these amazing illustrators.
[00:18:44] That's actually kind of we've kind of grown with that
[00:18:47] from the beginning as we've gone further into these sets.
[00:18:52] There are some challenges with working poor Oliver
[00:18:58] in the beginning.
[00:18:59] We gave him entire sets to work on and look like,
[00:19:02] hey, let's get this done in a month
[00:19:04] and we're like, yeah, that's not gonna happen.
[00:19:07] No one can do that.
[00:19:10] That's, there's 13 pieces of art for deck.
[00:19:14] There's a cover, then there's game boards,
[00:19:18] illustrations and the thing we started to realize
[00:19:20] as we got further was we don't have to do one artist.
[00:19:25] Because you have these decks to yourself
[00:19:28] and because they're interchangeable throughout,
[00:19:30] it's actually more interesting to have different artists.
[00:19:34] So that was something we started to a couple of years in
[00:19:37] and we started to implement.
[00:19:40] Both for that reason of just more interesting,
[00:19:43] but also just practically it makes more sense
[00:19:46] that we can have four artists working on a four pack set
[00:19:52] at the same time rather than hopefully getting it done.
[00:19:56] Sooner the other thing is illustrators
[00:19:58] have all different kind of schedules.
[00:20:01] So there's a lot of juggling that.
[00:20:05] And then fast forward to unmatched adventures
[00:20:07] when we did tales to amazed,
[00:20:09] we embraced that even further.
[00:20:11] There's the thing about the cooperative version
[00:20:13] is there's almost double the art in that set.
[00:20:19] So we really had to think about how we do this
[00:20:22] and so we embraced it.
[00:20:23] And then again now going into the turtles
[00:20:27] that was actually one of the reasons
[00:20:28] I was excited about turtle.
[00:20:29] So we kind of discussed actually as a team
[00:20:34] and how to pitch this to paramount afterwards
[00:20:38] because I actually wanted this to be
[00:20:42] not really one iteration of the turtles.
[00:20:44] I wanted it to be a celebration of everything turtles.
[00:20:48] So we kind of went in pitching it like,
[00:20:51] you know what?
[00:20:52] We're gonna get an artist that is clearly
[00:20:54] that's Michelangelo, right?
[00:20:57] And clearly that's Leonardo,
[00:20:59] clearly that's Raphael.
[00:21:00] So you've got these dark and moody for Raphael
[00:21:04] almost like, you know, black, white and red.
[00:21:08] And then you've got Michelangelo that's just,
[00:21:11] that's his cartoon.
[00:21:12] Heather Von, right?
[00:21:14] Like it's Michelangelo?
[00:21:16] Yeah, so just that's new information there.
[00:21:21] But it's just a lot of fun to see.
[00:21:24] And so when we pitched that,
[00:21:25] we kind of put it pitched together with artists
[00:21:28] and how that could all look.
[00:21:31] And it took a little bit of just explaining,
[00:21:33] hey, it's okay.
[00:21:34] Like trust us, it'll be okay
[00:21:35] because you've got your own deck, you know?
[00:21:37] You've got, and that art can be separate
[00:21:40] from the others and all that.
[00:21:43] And to paramounts credit, they're like, yeah, go for it.
[00:21:46] And they've been amazing through this process
[00:21:50] of new art and original art.
[00:21:52] So you're gonna see a lot of fun
[00:21:55] influence from everything, from animation to comics
[00:21:58] to movies and in the scopes and all sorts of things.
[00:22:05] So there's gonna be a lot of fun stuff
[00:22:06] in that regard.
[00:22:09] And a lot of art as well that we've got a new plan too
[00:22:12] for all art that we're gonna be,
[00:22:15] we actually just kind of put some stuff up on the Kickstarter page
[00:22:19] about that but that's gonna be actually our stretch goals
[00:22:21] as we go.
[00:22:22] No, nice.
[00:22:24] Basically introducing alternate art.
[00:22:27] So just in the basic and alone with Altart aside,
[00:22:30] we've got 10 artists working on this project.
[00:22:33] Oh, wow.
[00:22:33] And when you start counting Altart cards,
[00:22:35] we've got 20 plus artists working on this project.
[00:22:39] So it's quite a bit of art that you're gonna get to see
[00:22:44] including Kevin Eastman.
[00:22:45] We have, we've talked to Kevin Eastman's studios
[00:22:49] and we've got an Altart card for that as well
[00:22:53] that we've gotten approved for.
[00:22:55] So just a really, I think fans are gonna be,
[00:22:59] fans of turtles and fans of unmatched
[00:23:01] are gonna be excited to see what we have to offer here.
[00:23:05] Yeah, I'm in particular looking forward
[00:23:08] just in terms of the art alone,
[00:23:12] like the different types of cards for attack and defense,
[00:23:17] for the turtles because I, you know,
[00:23:20] but was a huge teenage mutant in Jeterals fan
[00:23:23] of many different iterations.
[00:23:26] And yeah, especially to hear Heather Vaughan has Michael
[00:23:29] Angelo and I hear what other artists are on
[00:23:34] the other turtles.
[00:23:35] I'm very much looking forward to it
[00:23:38] and to see how the game plays similar to tales to amaze
[00:23:43] but being able to take the turtles out
[00:23:45] and kind of use them in other sets for other matches
[00:23:49] is very exciting.
[00:23:51] Yeah, it's really cool you're gonna get a new set of minions
[00:23:56] like you had minions which were a lot of cryptists
[00:23:58] in the last version you're gonna get.
[00:24:00] Yeah, new minions here again
[00:24:02] and another excuse to get even more characters in here.
[00:24:05] Obviously you're gonna get be Bob and Rock's daddy
[00:24:08] you're gonna get, but you're gonna get some of the ones
[00:24:11] that you're like, oh, I'm okay, that's cool.
[00:24:14] So yeah, I think you're gonna get some fun little surprise characters
[00:24:18] there.
[00:24:20] So yeah, I'm excited.
[00:24:24] I'm kind of just curious in terms of like we talked about
[00:24:27] the cards and some of the art for it
[00:24:29] but what's the process like to figure out?
[00:24:31] All right, we got the license for the turtles.
[00:24:34] We're putting it together.
[00:24:36] We gotta get artists and then how does the team process
[00:24:41] or how do you work to develop the actual,
[00:24:44] whatever the card's gonna be called,
[00:24:47] whatever the attack or the defense?
[00:24:49] Because every card has a name and like
[00:24:52] a little description of what it does
[00:24:54] and a design element to it for all of these different sets.
[00:25:00] What are the actual mechanics
[00:25:02] like to come up with all these things are going to be?
[00:25:06] Yeah, I mean there's definitely kind of changes hands
[00:25:09] almost like a changing the batons sort of in a relay race.
[00:25:15] I would say not that we're not involved earlier
[00:25:19] but for game design, especially with the cooperative
[00:25:22] dergal games was involved with this still just as they were
[00:25:27] with the cooperative version.
[00:25:30] So I know they've had definitely a lot of influence
[00:25:33] on that game design for restoration games
[00:25:37] and then we'll take it and massage it
[00:25:39] and play test and do a lot of that.
[00:25:41] So we're involved in kind of early play testing
[00:25:43] a little bit but for the most part,
[00:25:46] they're doing their magic on having basically a spreadsheet
[00:25:49] of the cards right?
[00:25:51] And so there's the kind of abilities
[00:25:55] with the beginnings of card names.
[00:25:58] When that's turned over to us, obviously
[00:26:02] the attack and who the card belonged to,
[00:26:05] if you're not familiar, there's either the hero
[00:26:08] or the sidekick or an any card.
[00:26:11] So that will actually give us an idea of okay
[00:26:14] who's this character going to be on this card
[00:26:17] or does it need to be the character at all
[00:26:18] could it be something completely different?
[00:26:22] Interestingly, so the way I've always kind of looked
[00:26:25] at unmatched cards is and even when we looked for realist raiders,
[00:26:29] I love looking at comic artists,
[00:26:31] I also like looking at editorial artists
[00:26:33] ones that can look at it at a problem or some weird idea
[00:26:38] and create a visual out of it
[00:26:41] because that's really what these cards are.
[00:26:44] They're oh, this is an attack but it also means
[00:26:47] or even scheme cards,
[00:26:50] like scheme cards are not attack or defense there.
[00:26:52] Hey, you get to do this special thing.
[00:26:55] Well, that special thing, how would you illustrate that?
[00:26:58] It doesn't have to be the character all the time.
[00:27:00] It could be a knife punching through an orange
[00:27:05] and maybe that means something.
[00:27:06] I don't know, too.
[00:27:07] Right.
[00:27:07] I do why I just said that.
[00:27:10] But so yeah, so there's those sort of things
[00:27:13] but what I find interesting is a lot of times
[00:27:16] just the hard title that game design has come up with
[00:27:19] can tell us a lot if we know in a lot of times
[00:27:22] we're like, oh, that actually kind of brings up visuals
[00:27:25] in the head.
[00:27:26] So what we'll do as the picture people
[00:27:28] is kind of look at that spreadsheet
[00:27:30] and I'll just start typing in notes on like art notes
[00:27:33] on what could this be.
[00:27:35] And then we're thinking about artists and illustrators
[00:27:38] that we think would be a good fit.
[00:27:40] We start reaching out.
[00:27:41] And then by the time we get someone who's a good bit,
[00:27:44] we actually share that spreadsheet
[00:27:46] and say, hey, these are my thoughts on it.
[00:27:49] You don't have to take those right?
[00:27:51] Like you could have completely better ideas
[00:27:53] but at least their thoughts start as on kind of
[00:27:55] and I think it's helpful for people who haven't worked
[00:27:58] on on match or even games at all.
[00:28:00] Because okay, I see where you're kind of going with this.
[00:28:03] So that's kind of,
[00:28:06] that's more a little bit of view from my side
[00:28:08] because I don't have as much view on the game.
[00:28:12] In design side
[00:28:14] because that to me honestly,
[00:28:16] like I think they see the visual stuff sometimes
[00:28:18] as magic, I see what they do as like black magic.
[00:28:21] Like it's like math magic, you know
[00:28:23] and I'm not a math person.
[00:28:26] So,
[00:28:27] so I'm always amazed at how like,
[00:28:30] oh, that you know,
[00:28:31] I don't understand how this deck works until I play it
[00:28:34] but when I do them like man, you guys are geniuses.
[00:28:37] This is great.
[00:28:38] You mentioned the naming the cards
[00:28:41] and that just, that much must be a blast.
[00:28:45] I just hope there's a Raphael card that says,
[00:28:48] oh, Jose, can say go bad.
[00:28:49] I just need that in this game.
[00:28:53] It probably won't be but if it was, that would be amazing.
[00:28:55] There is.
[00:28:56] Now I gotta take a look, maybe we'll change the name.
[00:28:59] I don't know.
[00:29:00] I can make a rest of it.
[00:29:01] That could be a stretch goal.
[00:29:04] Yeah.
[00:29:06] All right, let's take a quick break.
[00:29:16] After a string of unexplained disappearances
[00:29:18] in the southern parts of the United States
[00:29:20] retired detective Clint searches for his white trash brother.
[00:29:24] While searching for him, he ends up being abducted by aliens.
[00:29:28] He is now in the arena for big guns, stupid rednecks.
[00:29:32] An intergalactic cable's newest hit show, which puts him
[00:29:35] and he other humans in laser gun, Glatatorial combat.
[00:29:39] And his brother is the reigning champion with 27 kills.
[00:29:43] That's the premise for a new book from Bandabarans,
[00:29:46] Big Guns, stupid rednecks.
[00:29:49] I got a chance to see an advanced preview of this book
[00:29:51] and being from the south, honestly,
[00:29:53] how's a bit skeptical going in?
[00:29:54] But they won me over and nothing is more powerful
[00:29:56] than an initially skeptic convert to my book.
[00:29:59] In Jimmy's words, big guns, stupid rednecks is many things.
[00:30:03] But it isn't subtle.
[00:30:04] It tells you exactly what it is up front
[00:30:06] than it delivers with a great premise, fantastic art,
[00:30:09] and a whole mess of fun.
[00:30:11] I had a great time reading big guns, stupid rednecks,
[00:30:13] and what I thought was going to be
[00:30:15] an indictment of redneck culture quickly showed
[00:30:17] it was actually a love letter.
[00:30:19] A family mystery, brother pitted against brother aliens,
[00:30:22] fighting for profit and a big arena.
[00:30:24] This truly has it all.
[00:30:25] Issue one is now already,
[00:30:27] but you can still pick up a copy
[00:30:28] on the Band of Bards website
[00:30:29] and create issues available via your previews
[00:30:32] or in order for them, or just ask your LCS.
[00:30:35] Don't miss this.
[00:30:36] Let's get back to the show.
[00:30:38] What can you tell us, Jason, about what fans
[00:30:40] who are listening to this
[00:30:43] and who want to check it out,
[00:30:44] like when the Kickstarter is live?
[00:30:46] Like can you tell us any more about the artist's involved
[00:30:49] or what can we expect from the Kickstarter
[00:30:51] in terms of the game that's going to be offered
[00:30:54] at end any of the stretch goals
[00:30:56] or whatever you want to tell us about it.
[00:30:58] I'm just so excited.
[00:31:02] Yeah.
[00:31:02] Yeah, so I think when we first announced,
[00:31:05] we said end of September or September,
[00:31:09] I think we said we're actually stretching that out
[00:31:11] to October 1st, we just announced that.
[00:31:14] So maybe we want to give a little bit more time
[00:31:17] to finish off some stuff to make it pretty.
[00:31:21] So October 1st is our date.
[00:31:26] As I mentioned a little bit,
[00:31:28] our stretch goals are going to be those alt art cards
[00:31:31] and we're gonna kind of hit those increments.
[00:31:33] I think we're still kind of figuring out,
[00:31:35] obviously when those are gonna be
[00:31:36] after we hit the goal.
[00:31:40] It's like I mentioned there's a lot of artists.
[00:31:43] I mean, I think you're gonna see,
[00:31:47] some of the guest artists on that alt art list
[00:31:50] are going to be some favorites from unmatched.
[00:31:54] I think you're gonna see some new artists
[00:31:57] that are gonna be new to unmatched,
[00:32:00] not necessarily new to maybe comics, things like that.
[00:32:04] We're also diving into for those
[00:32:06] we're diving into the Paramount Library.
[00:32:09] So if we're not just limited to those,
[00:32:11] we're going to be able to have stuff from that library
[00:32:14] of which is comics and even video game, stuff like that.
[00:32:19] So you're gonna see some kind of new twists
[00:32:23] to that.
[00:32:25] So I think for people that are collectors
[00:32:26] of the alternate art, this is like,
[00:32:29] this is gonna be a really fun deck
[00:32:32] and again, however many cards are in it
[00:32:34] is really up to how many backers are getting.
[00:32:38] As far as artists, I can say we have,
[00:32:42] it's not news but Oliver Barrett has done the cover art.
[00:32:46] He is going to be the artist for shredder.
[00:32:51] Oh, nice.
[00:32:52] Yeah, he's gonna be great.
[00:32:55] We've got Juan Chai Mariah in this,
[00:32:59] who's working on, I don't know,
[00:33:01] so as it's gonna be mad at me or not,
[00:33:03] I'm saying what artists work on what but we'll say it now.
[00:33:08] So Juan Chai is gonna be doing crang.
[00:33:10] So crang is a lot of fun.
[00:33:14] I can talk about that a little bit too,
[00:33:16] going to some of the fun on these two characters.
[00:33:19] Yeah, please.
[00:33:20] I'm gonna put your going against but
[00:33:22] I already mentioned Heather Vaughan for Michelangelo.
[00:33:25] We've got
[00:33:27] you to Alonata who did the Sun's Origin set.
[00:33:32] It was done by the Sun's Origin set.
[00:33:34] Which is, I think a great fit.
[00:33:39] We've got
[00:33:40] Marie Burzeron who did all of Thunder Road
[00:33:43] and also did Tesla in the last adventure set
[00:33:47] is doing Donatello.
[00:33:49] And that one's just fantastic.
[00:33:52] If you're familiar with the Tesla set,
[00:33:54] it kind of just matches up, right?
[00:33:55] Donatello with this tech.
[00:33:58] Like the Tesla character and Donatello is
[00:34:01] I'll admit my favorite turtle.
[00:34:04] So, you know what?
[00:34:05] It's told me that this was actually a lot of fun
[00:34:07] to ask artists.
[00:34:09] Because really that I didn't,
[00:34:11] for when, especially the alt artist,
[00:34:12] I didn't assign artists, right?
[00:34:15] Like we just said, look, here's all the characters
[00:34:17] and you guys tell us who you want to work with.
[00:34:20] I had to actually tell people like you can't do Donatello
[00:34:22] and I was surprised at how many artists
[00:34:26] you know are like Donatello, you know,
[00:34:28] hey, I want to be the,
[00:34:30] I guess it should have made sense.
[00:34:32] Yeah.
[00:34:32] And like,
[00:34:33] sorry, I was going to say I think
[00:34:35] between the ages of eight and 12
[00:34:37] I tried to turn anything into a boastamp.
[00:34:40] So.
[00:34:40] That makes sense.
[00:34:41] Very, very easy to say the final.
[00:34:44] But yeah.
[00:34:46] And then so Raphael is a Carrie Randall.
[00:34:50] Oh, awesome.
[00:34:52] He's eight, I mean just nail Raphael in that set.
[00:34:57] So, so that's our artist
[00:34:59] and then we have Matea's,
[00:35:01] man, I hope I'm pronouncing his name, right?
[00:35:03] Man, he need is doing all the minions for that.
[00:35:08] So, really, really cool artists
[00:35:12] has worked on comics and all sorts of stuff.
[00:35:16] So, again, all these artists have been,
[00:35:19] you know, a blast to work with.
[00:35:22] But, and again, you're going to see variety too
[00:35:25] and the all-dardest list
[00:35:26] and we'll be releasing that.
[00:35:28] There's so many I'm not gonna go too crazy on.
[00:35:33] Yeah, that's my.
[00:35:34] But, yeah.
[00:35:37] So, so, so, crying and shredder.
[00:35:39] Yeah, I think for me, like,
[00:35:42] I think crying is just hilarious.
[00:35:44] Like it's just, you know, like,
[00:35:46] there's obviously the versions of crying,
[00:35:48] you know, in the movies that are a little bit more,
[00:35:51] realistic or whatever, but I just love the animated crying.
[00:35:55] Like, so that kind of is embraced a little bit.
[00:36:00] But, yeah, you've got crying is kind of treated
[00:36:03] is a little bit of the harder, you know,
[00:36:05] way to play almost like the Martians were in the last one.
[00:36:08] But, you're gonna be playing in the Thunder Dome.
[00:36:13] Yeah, yeah.
[00:36:15] What is it?
[00:36:16] I'm all of a sudden blanking.
[00:36:18] What is it?
[00:36:19] I'm blanking.
[00:36:20] Oh, yeah.
[00:36:23] I'm just been working on it and that's why
[00:36:26] it probably just left my tech-dry.
[00:36:29] Tech-node drone there we go.
[00:36:31] We got it.
[00:36:31] We said Thunder Road and I think it's like the Thunder Dome.
[00:36:34] Yeah, we got there, we journeyed there.
[00:36:36] So you've got some really cool.
[00:36:38] So anyway, it's a lot of fun there where you're kind of in there
[00:36:41] and you've got a little bit of battle with him,
[00:36:43] and Gen X.
[00:36:45] Shredder.
[00:36:46] Shredder has, you know, got basically his foot clan
[00:36:49] and he's trying to take over New York City.
[00:36:52] So you've got a battle kind of going on there
[00:36:55] with different burrows in the city.
[00:36:58] So that's a lot of fun with the turtles kind of jumping around
[00:37:01] the city and all of that.
[00:37:03] So there's definitely, there's very two very different ways
[00:37:08] to play the game when you have the two different villains there.
[00:37:14] That's so cool.
[00:37:16] Well, that sounds great.
[00:37:18] Yeah.
[00:37:18] Can't we go to say something?
[00:37:19] Has there been any talk of getting a deck
[00:37:22] for the villains to take out and play?
[00:37:25] Or will the villains only ever be adventures?
[00:37:29] And that's something we are looking into.
[00:37:33] And that's something we've said,
[00:37:35] we're looking to before.
[00:37:38] That's all I can say about that right now.
[00:37:40] Sounds great.
[00:37:41] There and all.
[00:37:42] Jason, working for a game company.
[00:37:45] I mean, do you play at all yourself or,
[00:37:48] do you get into playing the games?
[00:37:51] Or is it strictly like, I'm handling the visual art.
[00:37:55] This is what I do.
[00:37:56] I don't really get into a lot of the gameplay.
[00:37:58] No, I do play.
[00:38:01] I definitely don't play as much as probably I even should.
[00:38:05] Like it does become mostly working on it.
[00:38:10] And it, I mean, the one of the most fun parts of my job
[00:38:15] is being able to actually play a game that's,
[00:38:18] you know, we're play testing it, right?
[00:38:19] And when there's no graphics on it,
[00:38:21] there's nothing where we're playing this over Zoom
[00:38:25] and the table top simulator and stuff like that.
[00:38:28] But that's a lot of fun, right?
[00:38:29] To see the potential of what's the come.
[00:38:32] So that's really the most I get to play my,
[00:38:35] my youngest son and I will play when we can.
[00:38:40] But you know, he's a junior in high school now
[00:38:43] and he's got things to do.
[00:38:46] But we love playing unmasched.
[00:38:48] And I love playing unmasched because it's maybe
[00:38:50] the only one I can actually beat him at.
[00:38:53] That's important.
[00:38:54] That's pretty much, that's important.
[00:38:55] Every other game I play he can destroy me at.
[00:39:00] So yeah, we have plenty of favorites.
[00:39:04] My blank is the one that he can just kill me at every time.
[00:39:09] You know, there's there's Marvel zombies.
[00:39:12] We've gotten into and and I'm,
[00:39:17] that's one where we, we actually have the Galactoset.
[00:39:20] So we need to play that.
[00:39:22] We haven't played that part of it yet.
[00:39:23] So we were kind of building up to it.
[00:39:28] So yeah, I saw him jumping at the bit to that to play that
[00:39:30] but it's like, you know, when do we get to the table?
[00:39:34] You know, it's so, yeah.
[00:39:36] I found that like when, you know, when we would have
[00:39:40] game nights and Dan would bring over and you know,
[00:39:43] Dan can attest to this but bring over a ton of games
[00:39:46] and we play a lot of different ones and you know,
[00:39:49] we would we would play one and love it.
[00:39:51] And then there, you know, so many other games we wouldn't
[00:39:54] get a chance to like really get back to it.
[00:39:57] So that's why like two years ago I said, well, let's have,
[00:40:01] you know, an unmatched tournament because I really liked
[00:40:03] unmatched and I think between the two of us,
[00:40:06] Dan and I have most of the sets.
[00:40:09] Yeah.
[00:40:09] I think there's I think just about.
[00:40:12] So we got to Shakespeare.
[00:40:14] Let's get to it.
[00:40:15] We don't have the new Shakespeare set yet but um,
[00:40:20] yeah, we uh, we came up with our own rules.
[00:40:23] So basically we do like a, uh, we basic, I think last year
[00:40:27] we did it where we had everybody roll to set the order
[00:40:30] for the draft and then we do a snake draft.
[00:40:34] And um, everyone drafts two fighters and it's a double
[00:40:37] elimination tournament.
[00:40:39] So you play with your first fighter until you're eliminated
[00:40:42] and then you can play with your second fighter and maybe
[00:40:44] fight your way out of the, the, the, the losers bracket.
[00:40:47] And we do a double elimination tournament.
[00:40:50] And then I get prizes were on the East Coast so everybody,
[00:40:54] everybody gets an action figure, a graphic novel and a wild
[00:40:57] wild gift card.
[00:41:00] also
[00:41:01] I love that's great.
[00:41:04] Yeah, yeah, I think to me like that,
[00:41:07] unmatched is one of those that's like if, if everyone in your group
[00:41:10] knows how to play, it's so easy to go in and be like,
[00:41:14] all right, let's just, let's just play unmatched, right?
[00:41:16] Cause you know it's also going to be a different experience, right?
[00:41:18] Cause if you have, especially if you have most of the sets,
[00:41:22] you can almost always make a new combination.
[00:41:25] You have a play with people, right?
[00:41:26] Like, yeah.
[00:41:28] Um, so to me, but yet no one really has to learn,
[00:41:32] they maybe have to learn how, you know, go through the card
[00:41:34] real quick and see how this is gonna play.
[00:41:37] But for the most part, you know the rules so you can just kind of get in
[00:41:40] because to me even in my hasbro days, that's kind of what we always
[00:41:44] talk about as the biggest barrier for people
[00:41:47] getting into games is the rules.
[00:41:50] Right, just learning, learning the game.
[00:41:53] And if you have, you know a game ambassador or something that, you know,
[00:41:58] knows the game and can, there's this priceless, right?
[00:42:01] To be able to get into that game.
[00:42:04] It's, it's really tough when everyone in the group is learning this game.
[00:42:07] That's, that's a hard thing.
[00:42:09] So obviously things have gotten better over the years
[00:42:12] because you have, you know, watch it played.
[00:42:14] And all these different, you know, ways to, oh, just go online and figure out,
[00:42:18] you know, you get someone telling you how to play.
[00:42:20] So there's, there's a lot of value in that too.
[00:42:23] And I think that actually has to a lot to do with just the growth of the
[00:42:28] industry as well.
[00:42:30] And, and the quality of the games is also how well they're,
[00:42:35] their taught and I mean, graph design is a big part of that.
[00:42:37] You know, and just making, and to me that's actually one of the,
[00:42:41] fun parts of my, my job and that I love to do is actually, yeah,
[00:42:46] I love working with artists.
[00:42:47] I love all of that.
[00:42:48] But I really like getting into the weeds of how is this supposed to play?
[00:42:52] How are people going to understand that?
[00:42:55] And how can we get it super easy?
[00:42:58] It's to understand, right?
[00:43:00] Like, oh, you know, and that's where play testing comes in, right?
[00:43:04] Like, you, oh, I see people are not doing what I thought they were going to do.
[00:43:07] So how do we, how do we make some, some graphics kind of better, you know, help with that?
[00:43:13] And, and, and theming to like, theming helps with that people, you know, that I think that's
[00:43:18] that's an important part of it.
[00:43:19] You know, is is, is everything has a little bit of a story to it.
[00:43:23] So like, if it's goes with the story, then graphically, then people are going to, oh,
[00:43:28] they're just going to naturally kind of follow that theme.
[00:43:31] So it's, that to me is the, the really fun part of my job.
[00:43:36] It's maybe boring to a lot of people, but it's, like, that's kind of the magic.
[00:43:42] And, and them, you know, that's another important part of going in and playing other people's games.
[00:43:47] Because there's just some amazing work out there by a lot of people that if you're not,
[00:43:52] if you're always in a silo looking at your own games, you've got to kind of see also what's
[00:43:57] going on out there.
[00:43:57] People are doing great stuff.
[00:44:00] And, you know, I hope some of the work we do inspires people and I'm inspired by their work.
[00:44:06] Yeah, it's, it's important to get out there in play games.
[00:44:10] But it's harder to do.
[00:44:11] Yeah, oh, sure.
[00:44:13] Now, but it's a good point in terms of the, you know, the playability and play testing things.
[00:44:18] Because I'll say that, you know, the first, the first year we did the tournament, we had a couple
[00:44:24] of people, you know, I think we had 10, you know, 10 people play.
[00:44:29] And half of them had never, you know, played before.
[00:44:31] Some of them might have shown up for like a game night.
[00:44:35] But, you know, we found it's a, I think it's a very easy game to teach, you know, any game that also
[00:44:40] comes with a card that like you can put in front of you that reminds you like, okay, you can,
[00:44:45] you can do two or three things, you know, maneuver attack or scheme.
[00:44:50] Just any, any order, any two you want, you can do two of the same, but that's, that's it.
[00:44:55] And it's like it's right in front of you.
[00:44:56] And then I will say two of the guys that came out to the tournament ended up getting a couple
[00:45:03] sets.
[00:45:04] And both of them tell me that they play quite a bit with, you know, their kids who are, you
[00:45:10] know, like 10 to 12 years old and they, they love it.
[00:45:14] It has become like a new, you know, family game night for my friends Jeremy and Mark.
[00:45:21] And, and there's, there are different kids.
[00:45:22] Yeah, it was they just, they just jumped right in and we, when we do it, when I set the brackets,
[00:45:28] anybody who hasn't played before, I just try to put them up against somebody who also doesn't
[00:45:32] have a lot of experience and be like, all right, you had any questions, Dan and I are here.
[00:45:37] Here's how it works.
[00:45:38] Go, you know?
[00:45:39] And it really is a game that, you know, I think folks can pick up like very easily.
[00:45:44] And that's great here.
[00:45:45] That's awesome.
[00:45:46] I do love that about it.
[00:45:47] And the, like I said, the IP sets are great to get new players and a lot of the, the unmasked people
[00:45:54] are like, uh, give me all the like literary people and everything.
[00:45:59] So I know, like come out in the future we got like some of the Witcher.
[00:46:03] We got I think I've heard, I don't know if it's been announced or if it's just a rumor because
[00:46:07] all that just swirls on the head.
[00:46:08] Another buying three for legends.
[00:46:11] But the one I'm really excited about is the Rosie the River there, the other fan made context one
[00:46:16] because it was, yeah, the Danny, Jeannie, Shakespeare and Rosie the River.
[00:46:21] And then if I correct she's going to have a Mac.
[00:46:25] Yeah, that's that's what the, they get design that one.
[00:46:28] Yeah, that's amazing.
[00:46:29] I think people are going to be really, really, there's really some cool stuff on the way.
[00:46:35] I can say that.
[00:46:36] Like, and I love the guys drop the hints of what's coming.
[00:46:39] Everyone just the site for Zink like it's, yeah, yeah, it's awesome.
[00:46:43] It's really fun to watch.
[00:46:44] I don't, I honestly don't drop in to like a lot of the channels on that just because of the time I have.
[00:46:54] But but it is fun to see how much of that goes on and how excited people are.
[00:47:01] I can't say yeah, those sets are going to be really a lot of fun.
[00:47:04] And I think for me, yeah, the IPs are great.
[00:47:09] Again, turtles was turtles, right?
[00:47:11] Like at that time, I was a huge fan as a kid and growing up and got my kids into it over the years.
[00:47:18] So that, that obviously was great.
[00:47:20] But there is something about the non-IP ones where we take a character like Rosie the River
[00:47:26] or even going back to, you know, battle legends too, taking some of the,
[00:47:31] and even, you know, like we said golden bat, like taking some of these characters either that are from
[00:47:36] history or from legend, you know.
[00:47:40] And really being able to say what's the unmatched take on this character that's maybe new ground,
[00:47:49] you know, Bloody Mary was like another one, you know.
[00:47:51] And really getting to like, I actually love doing research on like these kind of characters and
[00:47:58] taking the dive.
[00:48:00] And then what I'll do a lot of times is is kind of do a write up on what I think and I'll present
[00:48:05] that to the team. I'm like, okay, this is kind of the historical stuff, this is kind of
[00:48:10] some takes and this is where I think we could go with it. And then the team can have some input
[00:48:17] and that to me is a blast, you know, to do and Rosie the River the same sort of thing, right?
[00:48:24] Like going into that character and what that person was thinking with that design and so going,
[00:48:31] okay, well, I would that have looked right if she actually did a Mac.
[00:48:36] So so yeah, to me, that's like having that kind of white sheet of paper to just start drawing on
[00:48:44] is a little intimidating but also fun too because you know, it's it's, you get to just kind
[00:48:51] of paint your own picture of it. So it's fun. Yeah, to do. Yeah, that's awesome.
[00:48:56] I also saw that it was announced that there's going to be in sometime next year,
[00:49:01] Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee said, because I know there was a Bruce Lee single set but then I think
[00:49:07] it was out of print for a while. But now there's a Muhammad Ali Bruce Lee and I think I saw
[00:49:14] somebody on Twitter respond, I don't know if it was Justin that responded to somebody's
[00:49:20] question saying it is going to be pretty close to the original Bruce Lee set that was
[00:49:25] that was released some time ago. Yeah, we're we're looking into you know, I think it's been
[00:49:31] mentioned we're looking into obviously there's concern with people while I already have the Bruce Lee
[00:49:35] set why would I want to get that? So you know we're looking at those things but you know,
[00:49:40] ultimately ultimately Bruce Lee is still going to be the Bruce Lee set, right? But you know,
[00:49:48] frankly, I don't know that we would really do a single set again. It just didn't make a whole lot
[00:49:56] of sense you know those were kind of early on when we did those dead bull was a whole
[00:50:01] other thing or they honestly that that's like a whole another discussion but it's a different podcast
[00:50:08] that's actually I can tell you some two hours talking about that. But but and how that came to be
[00:50:16] but the Bruce Lee you know it makes more sense as a too pack I think you just
[00:50:23] business wise maybe which is all that goes over my head anyway so I won't talk about that
[00:50:29] because I can't but yeah I'll leave, specifically I think is going to be really cool because
[00:50:35] again it's two people from from history and have some you know there's some amazing stuff
[00:50:43] and and again kind of doing the research on like you know and and Justin is Justin Jacobs
[00:50:52] is has been touting and wanting Ali in this in un-matched for very long time so this is
[00:50:58] kind of his baby and and he really had kind of an idea for this character for quite a while so
[00:51:06] it's going to it's you know he's doing Ali justice with this and and the artist we're talking
[00:51:13] to I think we'll we'll also do the same with it so so it'll be it'll be cool set coming up awesome
[00:51:21] well I'm very excited but yeah Justin I thank you so much for for coming on the podcast
